The Eight Standards of Mathematical Practice are a key part in the delivery of the Common Core State Standards. Throughout the new Common Core Content Standards you will see that the focus is on building deep conceptual understanding by describing, analyzing, modeling, reasoning, and solving real life problems. Join me to experience mathematical tasks and activities that model these eight practices and how they become an integral part of the content standards.

Ponder these questions:
  • What strategies and/or materials do you use to help students recognize patterns and relationships in their math learning?
  • Which is more important to you: That your students know how to perform the mathematical algorithms and facts that you teach them or that they develop their abilities to successfully solve problems?

Task 1: Menu Math

  • Work on the task individually first - everyone needs processing time
  • Work in groups of 3-4 to discuss what you were thinking to solve the problems.
  • Large group Discussion
  • What was the mathematical purpose of this task?
  • What standards of mathematical practice were used during this task?

Task 2: Charge and Linear Model Integer Problems

  • Work in partners - one person must solve the problem with counters and the other with the number line.
  • Share with your partner how you solved the problem with your model.
  • Now try the next problem switching roles.
  • Large group Discussion
  • What was the mathematical purpose of this task?
  • What standards of mathematical practice were used during this task?

Task 3: Walking Rates

  • Work in a group of 3-4 people.
  • Assign a reader in the group to read the problem.
  • Each person must take the lead role for one of the 5 parts of the task.
  • Each person in the group must be able to explain the process used to complete each portion of the task.
  • Large group Discussion
  • What was the mathematical purpose of this task?
  • What standards of mathematical practice were used during this task?
